Meet LC Gunn, the Boston-bred Nashville-based singer/songwriter/artist/creative who doesn’t like categories. After moving from city to city with her home studio equipment and whatever else fit in her car, she is now living between NYC and Nashville, working on her first EP.
Q: What inspires you?
A: Life and the human condition. It's confusing, hectic, messy, and at the same time there's so much beauty in it. That juxtaposition is dope, and I may never understand it. I try, and that keeps me creating.
Q: As an artist, why Nashville?
A: I ended up here by accident. I was writing in Florida for a few months, and stopped here on my drive back to NYC. I had an apartment in Bedstuy ready to go, roaches and all... Really what more could I want? There was something about Nashville though. My barista was an incredible folk guitarist. My bartender sang Jazz smoother than Nina Simone. My cab driver ran a full blown recording studio out of his trunk. This place was buzzing, and I got hooked. People assume it's all Country music, and it's not. There are these little pockets of noise and soul everywhere you turn. It's alive in a different way than NYC is. I needed a change, so I stayed.
Q: What do you hope to create and do through your music?
A: I want to create music that people can feel in a place deeper than their eardrums. That's where I hear music, it's inside. In addition to that, as an artist, you're more or less making the choice to be a public figure. With social media bombarding our every day lives, I want to set a good example. I want other young women to know that they don't need to do a bunch of drugs or sexualize themselves in order to be cool or loved. Life has a bigger purpose, and that's what I enjoy writing about.
Q: What’s your favorite song you’ve ever written?
A: Probably one called Home. It's not out yet, but it addresses a loved one considering suicide and is very personal to me.
Q: How do you think about style?
A: Style should NEVER be confused with fashion. Fashion is trend, it's in, it's out, it's scheduled. It has this pomp and circumstance that annoys me. Style is self expression, comfortability... It's your own parade. Own it. March.
Q: What’s your personal style?
A: I like shapes more than color, I actually don't wear colors anymore. No patterns, just solid black, white, gray, I'll rock cream sometimes. Color makes everything feel chaotic to me, and my mind is chaotic enough. I look for fit and comfort in pieces. I like simple; I can throw on almost anything from my closet and it works. I also gave away all of my heels last year, I'm slowly becoming a sneaker head. Pray for my pockets.
Q: What’s the first thing you do when you get out of bed in the morning?
A: Put on my glasses (I'm blind) and clothes (I sleep au naturel). I have four roommates so covering up is important. Things could get awkward real quick.
Q: What’s one thing you want our readers to know about you?
A: Tough question... One thing? I'm a nerd. I think it's ok to be a nerd. I read a lot, I like ancient history and documentaries. I like dinosaurs and fairytales and food. I try to follow my own path, as weird as it gets; and stay away from negative outside influences.
Q: What about the Nisolo brand resonates with you?
A: I love how simple and clean the designs are, I really appreciate that in a shoe. The story behind it also pulled at all of my heart strings, I've got a thing for stories and businesses that reflect the good in humanity. We need them.
Q: What are the best words of advice you’ve ever heard?
A: You're damned if you do and damned if you don't, so do the damned thing that's going to make you happy, damnit.
